New PSU Password Policy Coming on October 28, 2019
Posted by Melinda Barnsley on 16 October 2019 01:57 PM

On Monday, October 28, Plymouth State University ITS will enact a new password policy based on current industry standards.  The new, low impact policy will apply to all ITS managed applications and on all USNH campuses.  The new standards will require a password between 14-64 characters with no complexity (for example, it can be all lowercase) and no requirements for special characters.

Employees will stay on their current password expiration schedule.  After October 28 when an employee’s password expires, they will be required to set a password that will satisfy the new requirements.  However once changed, the new password will be good for 365 days (1 year). Employees will still receive password reminders via email.

Students and Alumni are not being required to change their passwords at this time, however, the new password standard will be enforced should they forget their password or need to reset it as part of account re-activation.

While users can use any combination of letters, recent research shows using passphrases instead of traditional passwords are more secure and easier to remember. Here’s an article written and published by the Washington Post which explains the differences between passwords and passphrases, and why they’re actually easier to remember: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2016/08/11/theres-a-new-way-to-make-strong-passwords-and-its-way-easier/
