Adding a video through the text editor

When you encounter an empty text box in Moodle you'll notice the formatting toolbar. This toolbar displays various icons that help you modify your text's appearance. There is an icon in this toolbar that allows you to insert a Kaltura video directly into your text. Follow the instructions below to add a Kaltura video to any location with the formatting toolbar (this includes discussion posts, assignment descriptions, labels, week/topic headers, etc.).

Steps for Instructors

  1. Login to myPlymouth
  2. Select the myCourses tab.
  3. In the center column, select your class title from the appropriate semester category in the myCourses channel. You will now be looking at your course's home page.
  4. Click on the Turn editing on button in the upper right section of the screen.
  5. In the appropriate week/topic, open the Add a resource... drop down menu and select Label.
  6. In the Label text box, locate and click on the Moodle Media icon (see below)
  7. The Insert/edit embedded media pop up window will appear. Click on the Find or upload a sound, video, or applet... button.
  8. Moodle's File picker window will now come up. On the left hand side, select the Upload a Video to Kaltura option.
  9. On the right of the screen, select the Choose File button to search your computer for your video file.
  10. Once you have found your video, double-click the file to select it (or click the file once and select the Open button).
  11. Back in the File picker, select the Upload this file button.
  12. Kaltura will now take a few minutes to process your video. Select the Insert button to return to your label.
  13. You will see a link to your video file in the text box. This is normal. Once this label is saved, Moodle will recognize the link as a video and will display it in full. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save and return to course.
  14. You should now see your video (as its own label) within the appropriate week/topic. Depending on the size of your video, it may not be finished processing. Please allow Kaltura a few extra minutes to finish processing your video.
    • As with all items in Moodle, you may wish to hide the video from appearing to students. Click on the video label's eyeball icon to hide it until you are ready to release it to students.
