Adding a video through the text editor

When you encounter an empty text box in Moodle you'll notice the formatting toolbar. This toolbar displays various icons that help you modify your text's appearance. There is an icon in this toolbar that allows you to insert a Kaltura video directly into your text. Follow the instructions below to add a Kaltura video to any location with the formatting toolbar (this includes discussion posts, assignment descriptions, labels, week/topic headers, etc.).

Steps for Instructors

  1. In your course, click Turn editing on in the upper right section of the screen.
  2. In the appropriate week/topic, click Add an activity or resource and select Label.
  3. In the Label text box, locate and click on the Kaltura Media icon (see below)
  4. The Insert/edit embedded media pop up window will appear. Click the Add New, then Media Upload button. If you have already uploaded your video, select it from the list of existing videos in your library.
  5. Click Choose a Video to upload and Moodle's File picker window will now come up. Select the video you'd like to add.
  6. Kaltura will now take a few minutes to process your video. Once the video is uploaded, click Save and then Back to Browse and Embed.
  7. Next to the video you'd like to add, click the drop-down arrow next to Select and choose Large.
  8. An embed window will pop up and you should click the left button Embed.
  9. You will see a link to your video file in the text box. This is normal. Once this label is saved, Moodle will recognize the link as a video and will display it in full. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save and return to course.
  10. You should now see your video (as its own label) within the appropriate week/topic. Depending on the size of your video, it may not be finished processing. Please allow Kaltura a few extra minutes to finish processing your video.
    • As with all items in Moodle, you may wish to hide the video from appearing to students. Click on the video label's eyeball icon to hide it until you are ready to release it to students.

Steps for Students

  1. In your course, navigate to the assignment or discussion post where you need to submit a video. You can do this with any text box that has the formatting toolbar.
  2. Locate and click on the Kaltura Media icon (see below)
  3. The Insert/edit embedded media pop up window will appear. Click on the Add New, then Media Upload button If you have already uploaded your video, select it from the list of existing videos in your library.
  4. Click Choose a Video to upload and Moodle's File picker window will now come up. Select the video you'd like to add.
  5. Kaltura will now take a few minutes to process your video. Once the video is uploaded, click Save and then Back to Browse and Embed.
  6. Next to the video you'd like to add, click the drop-down arrow next to Select and choose Large.
  7. An embed window will pop up and you should click the left button Embed.
  8. You will see a link to your video file in the text box. This is normal. Once your text is saved, Moodle will recognize the link as a video and will display it in full. Now scroll to the bottom of your page and save your work.
  9. Revisit your post or text box and you'll see the video has been inserted. Depending on the size of your video, it may not be finished processing. Please allow Kaltura a few extra minutes to finish processing your video.
