Adding a Screen Capture Video to a Discussion Post

Login to myPlymouth

  1. Select the myCourses tab.
  2. On the right side of the screen, look for a box called myLearning.
  3. Click on the Moodle 2 link to visit Moodle's home page.
  4. On the right side of the screen, you should see a block called Kaltura Video LibraryClick on the logo to bring you into your personal video library (see image below).
  5. Once inside the video library, select the Record screen button.
  6. The Java Security Information pop up window will appear. Select the Run button (this allows Moodle to utilize Java for the recording).
  7. A Kaltura dotted line square will now appear on your screen. This is your recording area. Drag the small white squares to the corners of your screen so you will have the entire screen recorded.
  8. If you wish to record audio in addition to your screen recording, select the microphone icon in the lower left corner of the dotted line area. Choose the appropriate microphone from the list of options.
    • Tip: Once you've selected your microphone, snap your fingers close to the microphone. You will see several green bars as you make the noise. This confirms that your microphone is connected properly.
  9. When you are ready to record, select the red circle icon found in the lower left hand corner of the dotted line area.
  10. Kaltura will flash a three second countdown before the timer starts. You are now recording your computer screen.
  11. When you have finished recording, select the Done button.
  12. Kaltura will display a preview of your recording. Type in a title on the right side of the screen and select Upload.
  13. When the upload is complete, select Close.
  14. Your video should now be added to your video library. Reload your page if you wish to see it in your list.

Your video has been successfully uploaded to the Kaltura server. Now it is time to attach it to a discussion post.

  1. Enter into the appropriate Moodle course and visit the desired discussion forum.
  2. Start a new discussion by selecting the Add a new discussion topic button or click on an existing post and select Reply.
  3. Type out a name for this post in the Subject box (if you are starting a new discussion).
  4. You should be looking at the text editor area. Select the My Media icon in the formatting toolbar.
  5. The Insert/edit embedded media pop up window will appear. Click on the Find or upload a sound, video, or applet... button.
  6. Moodle's File picker window will now come up. On the left hand side, select the Choose a Kaltura video button (red arrow in image below)
  7. At the top of this screen select the Search button and then press the Enter key in the search box. This will search the Kaltura system for any videos you have uploaded.
  8. Your Kaltura library should appear. Click on any of the videos you wish to add (one at a time) and choose the Select this file button.
  9. Select the Insert button to return to your forum post.
  10. You will see a link to your video file in the text box. This is normal. Once this post has saved, Moodle will recognize that link as a video and will display it in full. Type out your remaining message in the text box (don't remove the video link) and select the Post to forum button at the bottom of the page.
  11. Click back into your new post and you'll see the webcam video in full.
