4. Creating Notes (Text Boxes) on your e-Portfolio Page

How to use the Table of Contents:

Above in the upper left corner (three lines) is the Table of Contents of the video.  Click the three lines and you can find a specific subject in the video by scrolling through the Table of Contents.  Click the three lines again to get hide the Table of Contents.

Here is how to use the Note block

This is the most used of the seven "General Block Type" options.  It used to be called "Text Boxes" and showed at the beginning of the list of block type options.  

 

  1. Login to myPlymouth

  2. Select the myCourses tab and the myCourses window appears.

  3. In the right column of the window, in the myLearning section, click on Mahara (ePortfolio) You will now be looking at your Mahara portfolio's homepage.

  4. Click the Portfolio tab.

  5. Click on the Pages sub-tab.

  6. Select the page you want to edit and click the Pencil icon OR click the page name and then click the Edit this page button in upper right side of the screen.

 

Placing "Note" block type on a portfolio page:

The note block is found under the "General" block type on the left side of screen once in Edit mode.

When you see your cursor turn into a crosshairs symbol hovering over the Note block type, you can drag and drop the Note block type into any area on the page that appears with dash lines and filled with a light color as the cursor hovers over the area. Something like this: . Once you drop the block, the Note block type selection screen will open up.

OR

You can click on the block type and a window will open up to ask you where you want to position the block.  After selecting the location, click the “Add” button to complete the location and the block type selection screen will open up.  Most people prefer the drag and drop feature.

Filling out the "Note" block type configuration window:

This is used to write text, create links, insert pictures amongst text, and other text type options.  Once the block type configuration window is open, type any text you want displayed.   Some edit options are explained below: 

  1. Change the title of the block title or to "no title" by deleting the existing title text. 

  2. Below are the most commonly used edit options used in the "Block Content" section. In the upper left side of the task bar of the "Block Content" section is a toggle button.  Click the toggle button to see more edit options.
    1. Insert a image by clicking on the the picture icon. The selection screen will open and you can select or upload from your computer an image. After you select an image file,
      1. Click on "Image formatting options".

      2. You have the option to change the dimensions of the image.  If you would like to do so, enter in the first dimension number (on left) and delete the second dimension number (on right) and make sure Constrain is checked.  

      3. Select a border if you want a border by stipulating a border width.  

      4. Assign a alignment is optional.  

      5. To modify an existing image in the text box, just click the image then click the picture icon again and the selection screen will open so you can edit the selection.

    2. Insert a hyperlink by clicking on the chain icon and paste the URL of the website you want to display.

    3. To make text box full screen, click the expand icon which looks like this .  To return to the normal screen just click the expand icon again.

    4. Available are the usual document edit options such as fonts, font sizes, bold, underline, text color to name a few.
  3. Make sure you turn the comments to Off. It gives your portfolio page a professional look.

  4. Create tag(s) for your "Note block".

  5. Attach files to the "Note block". Upload a file(s) from your computer.

  6. Retract the block can be set to manually (Yes), automatically or No (default setting) retracting.  After you save your changes, test the retractable option by clicking the "Display Page" tab next to "Edit Content" tab.  If set to Yes, click the down arrow (V) to the right of the "Note Block Title" to retract the block. If set to Automatically, click the left arrow(<) to the right of the "Note Block Title" to expand the block.  Click the "Edit" button in the upper right side of screen to get back into "Edit" mode.

  7. Click the "Save" button when done.
