Adding a Lynda.com Course or Playlist to a Moodle Site

Lynda.com is an online library of courses on software tools and skills. To learn more, we suggest that you watch the introductory movie about the service, and watch How to use Lynda.com.

Prior to adding Lynda.com content to Moodle:

  • Create the playlist in your Lynda.com account, and ensure it is public
  • Note the course or playlist ID for the Lynda.com content, which can be located within the URL (see second image below)
  • Course IDs have 6 digits and Playlist IDs have 8 digits

Course and Playlist IDs

In the image above the top URL is a playlist ID, and the bottom is a course ID

In Moodle:

  • Turn editing on and click “Add an activity or resource.” Select “Lynda.com” from the Activities List and click the Add button
  • Enter the Activity name e.g. “Excel 2016 Lynda.com course”
  • For Preconfigured tool, change to “Automatic, based on launch URL”
    • This step seems counterintuitive, but we want to tell Moodle to open our specific course or playlist, not the Lynda.com homepage
  • For Launch Cartridge URL, the address differs for courses and playlists
  • For Launch Container, if you want to embed the course or playlist in Moodle, select “Embed.”
  • If you’d prefer to launch outside of Moodle, select “New window”
  • Scroll down the page a bit, click Grade and change Type to “None”
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save and Return to Course
  • Click on the newly created activity link to make sure it’s functional
