Respondus LockDown Browser can be used in conjunction with Moodle quizzes to prevent academic dishonesty during quizzes and exams. The software is available for students to download onto personal computers via a link in the Help & Resources block in Moodle. Additionally, LockDown Browser is also installed on all lab computers on campus for use in proctored or in-class exams.

To use LockDown Browser in your Moodle course, you will need to add the Respondus LockDown Browser block, then click Dashboard within the block to customize settings for each quiz. Requiring the LockDown Browser is not a default when new quizzes are created, so this setting must be added manually for each new assessment.

Students

You may encounter quizzes in Moodle that have been configured so that students must use the Respondus LockDown Browser. When you encounter this message, there will be a link provided to download the browser, if you have not done so before. To take a exam with the LockDown Browser:
  1. In any browser, locate the correct course on your Moodle Dashboard or in the Navigation block under My Courses
  2. Locate the Quiz- It will be denoted with "Requires Respondus LockDown Browser"
  3. Click the quiz and then click "Launch LockDown Browser"
  4. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging) choose Yes when prompted. Or, close LockDown Browser and then close the blocked program before restarting.
  5. Note that you will not be able to use any other applications while you are completing the quiz or exam.
  6. Once the exam has been submitted, close the LockDown Browser to re-enable access to other applications.
  7. If you need to take more than one exam with the LockDown Browser, you will need to re-open it each time (i.e. it only allows one exam per session).
