Grading Student Annotations in Moodle

The Hypothesis LMS app has been integrated with Moodle’s Grades, making it easier to assess student annotations. The integration singles out each student’s contributions to a conversation on a document and enables instructors to enter a grade and written feedback for an annotated reading assignment.
1. Make sure your assignment can accept grades from Hypothesis
When creating the assignment, make sure “Accept grades from the tool” is checked off under Privacy.
Then, under Grade, make sure your Type is set to “Point”.
Your Maximum grade can be any number, though in the Hypothesis grading panel you’ll give each student a score out of 10 points. This score is a percentage which is then applied to the Maximum grade. For example, if you set Maximum grade to 20 points, and you gave a student a 7/10 in the Hypothesis grading panel, the student’s final grade would be 14 points (because 70% of 20 is 14).
2. Launch the assignment
When you launch the assignment, you will see the grading toolbar at the top of the screen:

3. Select a student to display only their annotations
When you use the arrows to cycle through the class list or select a student’s name from the dropdown, you will see only the annotations of the selected student:
In the picture below, the student “Michael DiRoberts_PreviewUser” is selected, and so only the annotations made by that student are displayed.
You can also click on the drop-down menu to see the list of students and select the one you want.
4. Enter and submit grades
Enter any number (out of 10) and click on “Submit Grade”. Then select a new student to continue grading.
5. Access Moodle Grades
In your course, choose Grades.
Your grades for each assignment will appear in the gradebook. Please note that the assignment has you grade out of 10 points, but Moodle Grades will multiply this number by 10 to display your grade out of 100 points.
