Setting Up PlymouthCreate

Introduction

Plymouth State’s PlymouthCreate program gives students the tools needed to explore their digital identity and construct their own space online.

The following is how-to documentation for creating, managing, and maintaining a Wordpress Site through the University’s PlymouthCreate program. A printable, text-only variant of the documentation can be found at the bottom of the document. This content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License, and is intended to be used/modified by professors for relative course material for the use of PlymouthCreate.

Getting Started

Navigate to www.plymouthcreate.net and click on the Get Started button.

Do not enter your username and password. Instead, click the Login with Shibboleth button.

Enter the domain name of your choice. (You can only do this once, so choose wisely!)

Choose Your Domain

On the Review page, ensure your contact information and domain are correct. Then click Sign Up.

Review Information

You should be brought to CPanel (Control Panel). If so, you are all set up and now have a website!

Installing Wordpress

The next step is installing Wordpress, the CMS (Content Management System) that can be used for managing an ePort. Wordpress is the most commonly used CMS in the world, so it has an enormous amount of digital documentation on the web. More Plymouth-Specific documentation can be provided by the Academic Technology team at Information Technology Services, and support for innovative solutions to more specific customization and implementation for Wordpress can be provided by the Digital and Open Consultants in the Open Teaching & Learning Collaborative.

Click on the Wordpress link in the Applications section of CPanel.

Create a new instance of Wordpress by clicking the + Install this application button.

Install

Change the username, password, title, and tagline, scroll down and click + Install.

Install Settings

Wait for the installation to complete.

Bookmark the links. The first is your public URL, and the second (wp-admin) is the page manager.

Familiarize yourself with the Wordpress Dashboard:

  • Pages is where you can manage your individual pages
  • Posts is where you can manage your blog-like page content
  • Appearance is where you can change your website’s theme
  • Plugins is where you can add widgets and plugins that make your site even fancier.
